Beat Report

Filed under: Uncategorized — chrissyharms @ 9:19 pm

I have the English Department for my beat. =] I talked to Mrs. Jones in person yesterday during lunch about possible stories. She alerted me that Ms. Marsella-Jensen’s classroom , E224, has been plagued by heating issues the entire year and the district cannot attend to the problem for the time being. I will be in contact with the News editor in the near future to discuss this issue.

Also, I was alerted by Ms. T of how Washington’s AP English Literature scores compare to the national average [WHS is significantly higher]. I will be pursuing this topic in the days to come.

Inverted Pyramid/Lead Analysis =]

This article from the Associated Press uses the inverted pyramid style effectively. Right away, the lead answers the Who, What, When, and Why questions. After reading the first line you know that Patrick Swazye has died of pancreatic cancer on Monday at the age of 57. It is written clearly and gets the intended message of the article immediately to the reader. Also, the lead is not too long but it effectively uses recognizing details of Swayze to draw in the readers.

“Starting Point”

Sooooo Yoooooos…

Hmmmm, journalism skills? Basically, I was able to gain my first journalistic experience in sixth grade at Parkmont Elementary as a staff reporter. Although the articles we wrote were pretty short, I was still  able to get my first taste of the wonderful world of journalism. Other than that, my journalism experiences have been basically limited to what I have completed in Honors English in Junior High/High School . Last year, our New Journalism article was my favorite assignment in Honors English. I enjoyed the observations and interviews necessary to the creation of the paper. Outside of writing experience, I greatly enjoy reading newspapers and other literary sources for information. It is my hope that I will be able to improve my writing skills even more and will be able to affect my fellow classmates here at Washington through my words. I really don’t have any fears for this class- I am a hardworking person who is definitely not deterred by hard or challenging work. From this class, I want to gain more journalistic experience and gain new perspectives on issues. Also, I am looking forward to making new friendships and strengthening existing ones through the camaraderie of the paper. All in all, I want to have an enjoyable, memorable and informative experience being a staff member of The Hatchet. So yeahhhh….
